hey guys, i was just wondering about a little problem i have, im pretty sure i kno what it is but i just want some other opinions.

i get a puff of blue oil smoke when i start my engine but its not that simple. it only does it when the car has sat longer then maybe an hour, but less then say overnight. if i go to work park my car, come out say.....5 hours later. start the car bue smoke. if i drive home from work park my car and start it the next morning nothing. also it ONLY puts out A SINGLE puff on start up. it doesnt brn oil when ideling no matter how long, but it does smoke when im at WOT. not enough to see during the day but when theres a car behind me i can see the smoke in the air in someones headlights.

i kno alot of ppl are prolly thinkin valve stem seals but i just rebuit my motor and i put all new ones in. i also rebuilt my truck motor (22re) witch has basiclythe same valve stem seals and that engine never smokes anymore. so im pretty sure i instaled the valve stem seals right.

im thinking that its my turbo, because i have alot of oi in the intercooler piping but im running a catch can and its not filling up very fast. also the pcv hose that runs to the accordian hose isnt filled and dripping with oil when i remove it from a connector. but my question is that do turbos smoke a puff on start up?

this is my theory, the turbo is leaking and burning oil into the exhaust but not enough to really notice, when i shut the car off theres still residue from the leak withc makes smoke in the exhaust. when i start the car the residue smoke puffs out and then it seems to go away. andwhen i leave the car for a long time the residue burns and the smoke eventually cleanrs out of the exhaust on its own.

what do u guys think??????

shit that was long......cliff notes: car smokes on start up, only a puff, only on start up. new valve stem seals from fresh rebuild, looking for a sugestion on possible problem.

It sounds too random. Only smokes if sitting for more than 1 hour but less than 8 hours. Turbos shouldn't smoke at all.

Did you check the turbo for shaft play? How many miles since you rebuilt it? If you could, probably pull the elbow and see if the backside is coated with oil.

well everything is new and factory toyota parts but i do have leaks, but the leaks i have are from the CPS shaft seal, the turbo line gasket and i beleive from the pan. i guess i didnt put enough fipg on the pan or i didnt clean it good enough. my turbo has about 170k on it with no rebuilds or replacements to my knowlege. it has some shaft play, didnt actually dial indicate how much but i kno theres some there. the fins are not hitting the housing so its not that much.

i have a little bit of residue in the sparkplug galley, its not liquid but u can tell its glazed like it has somekind of residue or oil there. im not running the 3rd valve cover because it looks like shit and i feel it doesnt really do anything. and seeing as this car is not a daily driver, not driven in rain, and definatly not in the winter that its not really nessisary.

any other thoughts on what my mystery oil puff could be?

I have the same symptom, a buddy of mine told me it's turbo seal. So i'm waiting on the funds for a new turbo. BTW, how much oil are u burning?

well its not burning alot, hardly any at al id imagine, but i am leaking alot prolly about a quart a week, but i keep an eye on it and i have some mods to the oil system, particulary my pickup tube is bent down so the screen just touched the bottom of the pan.

but i think my biggest leak is from my cps shaft seal, i borrowed a buddies so i can verify.
