Anyone make a stronger-than-stock replacement for the oil drive gear? Something like a billet aluminum piece... I've heard a couple horror stories about that gear self-destructing.

I haven't seen one. But then again, I saw very few bad headgaskets. It always seems to happen to the same people over and over.

The gear can break from too high of RPM. The 2ZZFE Celica had that problem. A few came in seized, and the oil pump gear was shattered. A quick check showed the engine at 11,000 or so RPM. Toyota "fixed" the problem by putting out a TSB for stiffer shifter springs to prevent over rev and limit gear misses. Like putting it in second instead of 4th. So I have seen them come apart that way.
