what should i do to make sure this is taken car of?

Start by pulling off the lights and trim, and see just how far down it goes.

ouch! look at the differential make sure the rear end isnt falling apart look under the spare tire as well

+1 on under the spare tire. I just got done patching a 4x6" hole and several 2-3" smaller ones under the spare where it was allowed to sit and rust but not before emptying about a quart of water from inside the fender compartment. I need to check for leaks around my taillights as well.

i do have a little rust in there i found out about a while ago but its a small hole smaller then a dime but i don't think thats as bad as the rust under the tail lights
