Basically i just bought an 88 Turbo. Just rebuilt, bored, honed, magnafluxed, ported heads, walbro 255, adjustable FPR, ARP bolt kit, 2.0mm metal HG, 550's, 3" turbo back HKS, horsepower freaks intercooler kit, fluidyne radiator, lex AFM, greddy boost control, and Apex SAFC II manage.
Starts real rough, the guy who built it i believe timed it to 10 degrees could this be an issue to a very rough idle? Also my SAFC II reads 1.55 volts on the throttle position sensor which in turns tricks it to believing its 24% open already when my foot isn't on the gas. It has NOT been tuned yet but stilll should run relatively solid. Could this be a bad throttle position sensor or are they supposed to be 1.55v at close?

Also i noticed a few hours after i bought it of course, that there looks to be an exhaust leak just under the turbo, is there any gasket more proned to leaking than others or could it possibly be something burning up from install which was 81.3 miles ago? Only smokes/leaks when hot.

OK Do you have a W/B ? if no , You should have one. Get it tuned after you fix the exhaust leak. You say Leaking "under" the turbo? you mean where it connects to the mani? or where it connects to the DP?

OH and welcome..

*10 degrees as marked on the block

* i know i'll hit myself in the head after this but what is W/B?

*could be where it connects to the mani, didn't think of that, i have an extra mani/turbo setup ill have to look at

* thanks!

Also I forgot to add the FPR was adjusted over stock i think to about 60psi, way too high, so i turned it down a few turns, but i don't have a FPr guage to check what its at (its not hooked up yet) but my AFR guage starts out reading really lean at first then as car warms it goes way rich even at an idle

how bout throttle position sensor voltage? that is a big concern on my part since it thinks its always atleast 23% or so open when its actually closed. What voltage SHOULD it be at when closed?

First things first...

Welcome!

Second, get yourself a wideband. There are several out there for around the $300 range.

Next, you need to make sure your throttle position sensor is adjusted per the toyota manual.

Next, you need to make sure that your CPS (cam position sensor) is timed @ 10-12deg btdc, with the diagnostic jumper installed. (You'll need to look this up in the toyota manual also on how to do this.)

Make sure that your cams are set straight up, with the timing pulley @ 0 deg.

Last, make sure that you install/check the fuel pressure on the AFPR.

This will get you started in the right direction....

Check your ECU diagnostic codes.

60 psi fuel pressure is way too high...turn it down to 30 psi and go from there.

*That's what i thought w/b was.

*Is w/b really that important at my stage since the turbo isn't upgraded yet? i ask only because my budget willl already be stretched because of the planned tuning on july 5th and now this timing/exhaust leak stuff

*Is 10 degrees really much better or can i just reset everything to 0*, its easier that way b/c my timing light is old and broken.

*I have the HUGE toyota manual but it is not well marked. Any idea what section the throttle positioner sensor would be under???

*Anybody in the perkasie, PA area (between Phila. and Allentown) that would be willing to help?

Welcome, I'm no guru but I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can.
1. Yes, a wideband is important since your fuel system has been upgraded and your are running a bunch of mods so making sure your air/fuel ratio safe is very important. you wouldnt wanna fun lean. also, since you have an safc2 it would help in tuning.
2. There are "2 steps" in timing. The position the crank is in relation to the cams and ignition timing. first, take off the cam gear cover, turn the crank by hand until the 2 notches on the cam gears are in the 12 o'clock postion, then make sure that notch on the crank is at 0*. Second, jump the diagnostic port as per the toyota tsrm. Then, attach your timing light to the 1st plug wire and the battery. Shine the light at the notch on the crank as the engine is running and see where you're at. If it's not at the 10-12 area loosen the bolt for Cam Postion Sensor (CPS) next to the power steering resivor and turn the CPS unit until the notch is at the 10-12 range.

well i tried messing with my TPS just now and found no matter what i did i couldn't get a reading below 1.55 volts. It has 160K on it so is it safe to assume its shot??
