need some questions answers?

ok since I been tearing the supra apart questions have been poping into my head non stop lol hoping the supra experts can answer some of these for me.
1.)what the hell is the point of the little pin in the middle of the 3 holes on the cam gears????

2.)whats the terms "shortblock" and "long block" refer to or mean I have seen them used alot but never exactly understoon what they meant.
3.) Now I been reading and its sounds like assembling and fixing the bottom end of the supra seems like it can be a bit diffuclt with all the clearences and shit. Now can You get a maching shop to fix and assemble the bottom end or does machine shops not do that and assembling the bottom end is up to you?

thnx for answer these questions. I'll probaly become a huge pain in the ass over the next little while with my threads lol but at least im learning and getting some where and I really appreciate the help from SM:icon_bigg

but so basiclly the shortblock is the bottom end then lol so basiclly question #3 is asking if a machine shop can assemble ur shortblock......puzzles are fun:icon_razz

To keep the cam gears from spinning on the cams.

I've always thought a long block was the block, head, manifolds, accessories, etc. and the short block was the assembled block, and head. period.

depends on the machine shop. I could have had the machine shop I had do the machining for me build the block, but I did it myself.

You'd have to ask your particular shop.

Long block and short block can be a different description depending on who you're talking to. Genenally speaking, a short block is usually considered a block with various (or no) parts installed on it up to the head (head not installed). The long block can be anything from a block and head assembled, to a block, head, both manifolds, and all sensors installed, ready to drop in, hook up, power up, and go...

That pin is called a dowel pin. It makes the gear be in time with the lobes.

A shortblock is a block wtih pistons installed.

A long block is a short block with the head installed. ( I didn't read wiki, if they differ, they are wrong...again)

Clearances on the Supra are nothing special. An 83 Ford 351W (5.8L) has tighter bearing clearances.
