I'm getting ready to install a 2jzgte vvti with a Haltech standalone in my 87 n/a supra. I would like to know much power can a freshly rebuilt W58 tranmission reliable hold.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

According to SOGI 400rwhp. Second to last paragraph.
http://supras.com/06/techcenter/display.php?QID=9

"As far as transmission choices, you can reuse whatever trans your NA had. The W58 (NA 5 speed) will bolt up to the 7MGTE w/no problems. The NA auto trans is basically the same as the turbo auto trans, just some subtle differences inthe clutch packs, etc. to hold the extra power. If you do have an auto trans you might want to think about rebuilding it or replacing it w/a 5 speed as it will hold only about 300rwhp. The W58 should hold upwards of 400rwhp and the sky is the limit w/the R154 ." per SOGI website

Well we know the sky is NOT the limit for the R154...Albert and Turbo Habanero fried a few in their high HP Supras...

should make you questions the W58 number...

Fixed. A properly built R154 will hold quite a bit, remembers it's not the HP that kills things it's the torque. Seeing as the supra engines don't always leave the line under 2-step and sticky tires, there's still quite a bit of driveline shock especially if the rear starts hopping.

I would honestly say if you rebuilt your W58 and never really abused it in 1st or 2nd gear, it would hold 400 ft/lbs for awhile. As soon as you try launching from a sticky surface with tires that'll hook, don't expect it to last very long.

I'm building the car to be used on road course like Sebring FL, Daytona Speedway FL (road course part) and maybe road atlanta. I hope the W58 can hold 400whp. I will be running at daytona Dec 2014.

Just use a R154, almost the same gear ratios.
