For some reason about a 3/4 inch tip of the key broke in the ignition...it was still far enough out to get it with needle nose pliers but my little cuzn came over and pushed it in..Argh!!!:3d_frown: ... anyways i was like...'wtf can i do now?!"...so i just pushed it in with the other half of the key...and it turns! so now i have gotta have two car keys...a whole one to open the doors etc...and a half a key to start the car...funny huh? sometimes ill have to jiggle it to get it to turn...what can i do to take out the other piece?

Sigh...google...if it's not too much of a bother. Take a hacksaw blade and grind it into a key extractor. Dental pick. Toothpick with a drop of super glue on the end. On and on. Even when connected to the greatest source of information mankind has ever known one still has to use one's bean.

Using superglue, couldn't you get it superglued to the inside of the keyhole?

You could, but then you're using way too much. Personally I don't recommend that method but try it if you like.

There are two types of key extractor, one looks like a small hacksaw blade (as JetJock mentioned) the other is a bit like a tiny drill bit (I really prefer these). Which ever one you use you'll also need a small pick to move the wafers out of the way as you pull the key fragment out.

This happened to me.. I went to Toyota and luckily they had my key code on file with the VIN... he said I was lucky because someone had bought a key for it in the past.

Since my car is still in project mode, I haven't bothered to deal with it yet, so post back with your success/failure stories so I know what to do/not to do ;)

It has been a while since I took out a Toyota igntion. Like 9 years. Anyway, seems like with the key in it, you push in the side pin and the assembly comes out.

Just so you know.

edit: Brad, that is a bad ass looking car in the sig.

The method works fine. You could get glue in the lock if you were an klutz and used too much but a little acetone would fix that in a heartbeat. edit: I'm having a bad day. Think I'll close shop for the night...

My car came with the key broken off in the ignition. It's fairly simple to take the whole assembly out and get a locksmith to get it out. That's the route I had to take because that was my only key I had... It only cost 20 dollars for taking it out and getting 4 keys cut.
