Hey guys I am looking to put my motor from an 89 5sp supra into a 91 auto. I would like to use my transmission but I just am not sure about the ecu. Do I keep the 91 or do I have to get a 91 ecu for a 5spd? Also are there any other problems I may run into and would there be any reason for keeping the auto tranny?
thanx

no issues at all use the 5spd tranny, with your 89 7mgte 5spd ecu in the 91 and use the 91 turbo auto engine harness... You will have a couple of extra connectors that are specific to the auto tranny on the 91 engine harness that will not be needed and you will need to unhook and take the computer for the auto trans out of the car also.... will run great with no problems

the swap from auto to 5spd is easy especially since you have the 5spd car with all the parts needed. and the auto chassis has all the holes and spots needed to bolt everything 5spd related in...

heres a quick reference for what will work in what car....

87-88 7mgte ecu's ( yellow connectors) are all interchangable from 87-88 turbo supras

89-92 7mgte ecu's (gray connectors) are all interchangeable from 89-92 turbo supras

you need a 5spd ecu if you are 5spd

you need a auto ecu if you are auto

87-88 turbo engine harness's are all interchangable from 87-88 turbo supras

89 turbo engine harness's is specific to 89 because all the rest of the connectors are the same as 90-92 except for the big body harness plug is different so 89 is the only year you can use a 89 harness.....

90-92 turbo engine harness's are all interchangeable from 90-92 turbo supras

all sensors on engine from 89-92 7mgte's are all the same and use same connectors..

you can use an auto engine harness in a 5spd as long as you use the 5spd ecu you will just have some left over connectors

you can not use a 5spd harness with an auto trans and auto ecu.

there is spots to bolt in everything that is needed to be installed for a 5spd in both 5spd chassis and auto chassis....

I would stay 5spd also much better IMO...

My thoughts:

Your '91 auto already has the wiring harness, and the ECU that works well with the automatic transmission.

I would therefore keep the '91 wiring harness and ECU, use the sensors from the '89 engine that clip up, and change over only those that are different. I expect that won't be many of them.

There shouldn't be that many things that need to be changed over to fit with the '91 wiring harness.

if hes got a 91 turbo harness in the car he can use the 5spd with the 5spd ecu out of the 89 with the 91 auto harness and the 5spd tranny and all will work fine..

when I had my black 89 turbo 5spd supra it was an n/a I used a 7mgte with 5spd 7mgte ecu from a 90 supra and a turbo auto engine harness and everything worked great.... just had a few extra connectors not needed....

the sensors are the same on the engine from 89-92 7mgte's only difference in the engine harness is the body connector that connects the engine harness to the body harness.. ecu's are the same...

and since he stated he wanted to stay 5spd then I would. Its really not any harder then keeping the auto and no reason to not drop the 5spd in the 91 if he wants a 5spd.. since he has everything needed to do a 5spd swap( tranny, ecu, pedals, clutch master cyl, slave cyl and all the clutch lines....) it would be crazy to keep the auto in if he wants a 5spd... and a 5spd tranny with 5spd ecu and auto trans works fine no issues at all....
