More wiring problems...
I want to fix this right so I'd better get some input first.

btw...forgive any possible n00bness that may follow...I'm still learning a bit.

The CPS, complete with dirt and grime...

I'm not much for wiring and all that junk, but this looks like a fuse right? This is the side facing away from the CPS...notice 3 wires coming out of 3 holes...go figure.

What I'm getting at is that there aren't 3 wires going into 3 holes on the other side. (Blurry...sorry...camera phone)

The reason for this is there are chewed up wires everywhere of course. This is what has become of the wiring coming out of the CPS:

The really interesting part is that I thought this is why the car decides to start sometimes and others not...BUT...

Even with one wire intact, one wire cut, and one wire going absolutely nowhere, the car started up fine. When I went to take a look at the wires (while the car was running) and moved the wires right next to the CPS around a bit, the car abruptly shut off.

I'm confused.

So what should I do? Fix the chewed up wires is the obvious decision but that brings up two questions
  • Can I entirely bypass this fuse and toss it? And if not, can I just go get another fuse instead of jacking one off another wiring harness?
  • But...if this is the source of the car not starting, then why did it start when two of the wires were cut? The problem must be elsewhere right?

Either way, I'm halfway decent with a soldering iron and I'm ready to go...I just need to know what I need to be doing before I just jump in there and fuck something up.

Any help would be cool...this has been bugging me since i've owned the car. If I can get this fixed, I can tell people that this car is reliable and not have to do it while crossing my fingers behind my back.

Looks like the O2 sensor connector to me ;)

It should have nothing to do with the engine not starting...not having it will prevent AFR feedback corrections to the ECU.

Your no start problem lies elsewhere. Looking at the wires going to the yellow CPS connector, that's where I would start.

this is what i thought...
yeah, those 3 are the wires go to the o2 sensor. and i figured it didn't have anything to do with the car not starting sometimes...hence the car starting with two of them disconnected. I'd still like to fix that though. So my question still stands, can I bypass that fuse? could i just cut it out and rejoin the wires on the other side?

so, back to the cps wiring...I swear on a stack of bibles that all the wiring looks fine all the way up to the yellow connector. Could it be the CPS itself?

also...is there a place (or person) where I could get a new CPS with that particular section of wiring included?

Ummm...that's not a fuse...it's a harness connector for the O2 sensor (like I said).
You can just splice the wires, but that will be permanent....pay attention to join the correct wires, if you start blowing an EFI fuse, you did it wrong.

The CPS wires in the pic look cracked...could just be pic quality. Take a close look at the connector where the wires go in (both sides) and where the wires go in to the CPS housing. Also take a look at them where they go across the top of the cam plate.

oooh, harness connector...sorry i didnt catch that the first time.

Ill make sure to take a look at all those wire. that's definitely the source of the problem from what ive seen so far. Now I'm gonna go to town with a soldering iron.

Thanks for the help...i somehow just can't keep a straight head on my shoulders when it comes to wiring. I open the hood to look at them and have little mini-panic attacks. I'm still used to chevy smallblocks i suppose...not quite as complicated.

All you have to do is think of everything as a series of separate systems that all work together

Just isolate the problem and ignore everything else!

That being said, fix your CPS wiring :)
