Dam I hate messing with things that are working right, just to "try" and make the work better. Usually ends up failng and causing damage that would that would not have been there if I would have left things alone.
Case in point.
Browsing through eBay a few weeks ago,I came upon a mint fan shroud for $70 bucks and bought it. Thinking that it would be cool to go back to stock for looks and the big ol' 10 blade fan. Hell, that thing has GOT to pull more air than the Perma-cool 16 incher! So I start getting all new parts, fan clutch, fan,(nice to see what an OG fan looks like)and belts. Took my time putting it all together, smoothed out the plastic shroud, gave it a perfect coating of semi-gloss black, got all ss bolts and washers, made it look tight!
Then I got the idea to clean out the AFM because of varnish on the inside. I cleaned it all out and even used a little steel wool to polish some of the casting marks on the inside. Keep in mind that I took out the sensor before i started any work. Then I sprayed the inside good, even the vortex thing.
Put it all back together taking my time, and topped off the radiator.
Now after all this work I start her up,and it stalls al ittle,I give it a little gas and it revs up fine. Idle comes down, and it starts to stall and dies. DAM!! WTF?!?!
(Hold up,forgot to mention that while I was awaiting parts,I put in a new alternator belt and while tightening the mounting bolt the wrench on the back bolt circled and tagged the electrical post on the alternator. It blew the 100 amp fuse in the fuse block, and as far as the fuseable link,i'm not sure.
It killed the ACC part of the ignition, and was replaced with a factory fuse, and brought the ACC back.)
So I read a post that it might need to "learn" how to be a AFM sensor again, and disconnecting the battery will erase all codes.I do that, start it up,VIOLA! Idles just great!! Then the idle drops and it struggles and dies. DAM!! Alright, maybe I need to go for a little cruise, get things warm an working. I go for about 15 minutes, and the car runs great! Stock fan whirling, everything is tight,no leaks Alright!! Then I hear the a/c fans come on,I think,"no problem, their fans, they are supposed to do that!" Then the temp gauge starts rising as I pull into my carport. I freak, pop the hood only to find that the top of the radiator shroud was clipped by a leading blade, and was PULLED UP OVER the fan and holding it still and the shroud was pressed against the upper rad hose!! HOLY SHIT!!
I turn it all off and just gaze in amazement to my stupidity. Chewed up blade, notched shroud...dam...
One thing I did not take into consideration? Radiator. Huh? Yup. The shroud was designed for the wimpy stock radiator. Mine? Well it's a PWR,twice the thickness.............It kicked it out CLOSER so the fan could get sucked into it.Whata looniam..........I invision a cartoon boot hooked up to a rope and gear mechanism, and me in front of the boot, pulling the rope, kicking myself in the ass....

A big fancy aftermarket rad and no elec fans? If I was that rad I would have thrown that shroud into the fan also. :icon_bigg

So no holes or anything in the rad?
