So im about ready to have my machine work done. Just a few more small/semi easy steps to have the block taken down. Im trying to compile a list of things to have the machine shop do and I want to make sure I have everything.

Hot tank block
deck/lap the block ra30 or less
Machine/lap head ra 30 or less
Hone cylinders
check crank shaft

What else am I missing? Do I need to disassemble the head? I know I need to leave the timing case on and belt tensioner torqued to 36ft/lbs. Any insight is much appreciated. Also what I should expect this to cost me

My machine shop charged just under $600 to measure everything, block to be bored and decked, and turning the crank. Not too sure about the head, I had a new one that I used.

Thanks for the replies. I should have done some more research on hot tanking. Is it possible for me to do it myself. I want to clean the block and repaint it but its very dirty. Can I pressure wash it and have it sand blasted? Can I get away with just power washing and prepping for paint. Is hot tanking recommended?

Pressure check the head. Cams need to come out to machine the head. If you do valve job obviously everything would need to come out. Have him check to see if you need to line bore the block.

Good to get new freeze plugs while your in there as they can be a major pain in the car. Fresh start is always good. Plus there cheap and hot tank will do a much better job. Same for oil pump ds bearings. If you do those too take him the bearings and ds.

If you are using a MLS gasket, the lower the RA the better. My machinist has been building performance import motors for 20+ yrs. and he told me that my request of 25 RA was pushing it for an MLS gasket to seal properly. He's built everything from the mild street motors to the wild nitrous/ultra-high-psi-charged race motors and he has all the references to back it up, so I believe him

If you hot tank the block, you'll need to replace all your freeze plugs and also your oil jackshaft bearings afterwards.

This thread says otherwise. I just want to make sure I do the job right. If I doon't have to change the freeze plugs I don't want to.

Then don't do it lol, but imo these guys know what they're talking about, i've never had a block hot tanked, but it's certain to ruin bearings, and loosen freeze plugs if you don't mind them popping out while your driving down the road i wouldn't worry about them
