ok i have an 88 n/a, 5spd targa. i bought it for my 18th b-day and a couple months later it started to knock. it had 167k miles on it and it would start knocking at around 3000rpms. two weeks after that, my crank pulley fell off.

my question is, could the knocks have been coming from the crank pulley? and if i fixed it would the knock problem go away?

Yes, the knocking could have been caused by the crank pulley being loose.

I say maybe, the crank may have walked and eaten a bearing. You might want to replace, and see if it makes anymore funny noises. Check for crank walk by grabbing whats left of your crank and try and move it back and forth. If it wiggles far you've got problems (the exact # for how far it can move and still be ok is located in the tsrm)
