when i try to check codes, it blinks constantly, like nonstop. the last time i did it i starred at the blinking check engine light for like 5 min without it pausing once. Its probably because of the auto to 5speed conversion. and... CPS wires?? huh.

CPS=Cam Position Sensor...it's located right behind the exhaust cam gear on the turbo side of the head.

Wiggle the wiring to it a few times in a few places, and see if the car starts.

Then report back. :)

edit: Does the tach needle bounce slightly while cranking?

CPS is on the on the passenger side of the motor right in the front, there is a big green connector sitting on top. Wiggle it around as everyone else as said.

It may be grey instead of green. I don't know what year they switched though...
Anyway, I circled the plug and top half of the cps in this pic.

The plug closest to the valve cover appears to be the Cps connection, but I can't tell which wires are going to it on the far side.

definitely CPS wiring, i had the same EXACT problem and i fixed it by figuring out which wire had a weak connection and soldering it
i suggest you take apart the mess thats there and get each wire so its separate, then reconnecting them by using crimp connections or solder.
do a search and u can find which color wires match to which
