intermittent issues - trouble codes thrown

Over the past two weeks give or take, I've had an intermittent issue happen to me about 3x in my '87 Toyota Supra (has an '89 turbo motor, but is set up as an N/A right now.. long story there). Basically the car apparently runs extremely rich and stumbles badly for a few seconds usually and then clears up. You can see some black smoke come out the exhaust if ya give it a little gas for those few seconds. Normally it runs great though.

The timing was good last time I checked it but unfortunately I can't recheck it due to my timing light dying. Plugs are all new, pretty much all gaskets, and quite a few other things as I just got done putting a new head gasket and the works in a few weeks ago. I did have a few issues putting it back together. The connector was broken off what I believe are the knock sensor and the oil pressure sender (one is kind of below the distributor and the other is underneath the intake runners on the other side). I resoldered those connectors and all seems well. My oil pressure is fine as well, I haven't seen an issue with that yet. Also the connector to the oxygen sensor was broken off which I also resoldered or crimped, I don't recall offhand.

Anyway, moving on, I hope to replace the harness at some point as most of those wires seem fairly brittle. The thing that gets me though is that I'm getting a code 22 and code 24, which according to the TSRM are the water temp. sensor and the air intake temp. sensor. If it was just the water temp. sensor, I wouldn't be quite as confused as that connector was messed up as well. I'm not sure why I'm getting both codes at the same time though. I did clear the codes and I'm still getting those two. Whereabouts is the air intake temp. sensor? Is that located within the AFM or? Any ideas or help would be appreciated. I usually don't have much of a problem with it. As I said it's very intermittent and usually doesn't last long when it happens.

Thanks in advance.

The air temp sensor is indeed inside the afm. You could try cleaning the sensor with some electrical parts cleaner. NOT Brake cleaner, carb. cleaner, or any other harsh agent. They'll kill the afm quick. The coolant temp sensor could cause a rich condition, if it was giving a low reading. There are testing procedures for each in the tsrm. Both are in the EFI section.
