how to set gas gauge?

i've had this gas gauge for all of last summer and i want to fix it.

I removed the panel and the needles to put in my speedhut gauges. So i put everything back in, set the gas needle to where it sat BEFORE taking the cluster apart, and put it all back together. I started the car and the gauge went way about the "F" mark, when in reality it only had half a tank of gas.

So i took it apart again and this time set it at the "E" mark. Put it all back in and started the car. This time it didn't even budge, so i said "&uck it". I went to the gas station and filled the tank up completely to see if that would bring the gauge back to life. Well on a FULL tank, the needle shows only half....

So how do i calibrate the thing? i cleaned my sending unit as well.

Try setting it to "F" now if its full?

Never done it, did it come with a manual or anything on how to set it?

Also remember that the gas gauge has a slow response, when I fill up it doesnt show I have a full tank until about 5 mins later.
