my computer just took a crap because something got fried when the power went out the other day because it wasnt plugged into a grounded outlet. I think the hd's are good, but mobo, possibly processor, and for sure the powersupply are done for. i had a 2.6ghz p4 with windows xp on it. I have no idea what to get or what to spend. I hear that the new vista is a recouse hog and doesnt run very well on slower computers, but what will it run decent on and how much would that cost? I am planning on using a dvd burner to backup home movies from my video camera, but not really editing or anything. the newest game i play is warcraft 3 so gaming ability dont matter much. I need something within the next month or so, but must be able to plug in my old hd's to swap over all the files i had on there. can i do this with windows xp drives formatted in ntfs with a computer running vista? or would a moderatly fast xp machine be better for my goals? if so where can i find one with xp loaded and atleast microsoft word and excel on it? all i ever really see latey is vista machines.
what do you guys think? my budget is 900 at the very very max, but 400-700 would be better if i can find a nice one that will last me a while. I dont need a monitor, keyboard, speakers or printer, they are all less than 1 year old. the tower itself was about 3 years old.
please help me.
