i bought my 88 n/a from the original owner in april. In june there was a knocking sound coming from the engine. It blew in late june and the mechanic after being astonished that i was able to drive it 5 miles without a water pump belt, a shattered fan, and no power steer in said the hamonic balance had blown out. the questions are... is the knock a common thing in the 7mge? is it b/c of the harmonic balance usually? should i replace the harmonic balance and belts and such sinc my engine only has 169k miles... or should i get a new one?

well if your crank pulley bolt is loose, it will create a kind of knocking sound.. you'll notice the sound change if you let the car idle and turn the steering wheel if it is indeed the crank pulley bolt.. if you run it too much with the bolt loose, you will destroy the keyway (?) witch in turn ruins your crank iirc... so just tighten it to the factory spec and see if the knock goes away... if anybody has anything else to add please do.

You seriously need to stop driving it. Id get a compression test at least if you've been driving it without a water pump belt. You should have checked it out better before you bought it sounds like a lemon

no, the balance blew out and i havent driven it since, but i have started it up and when i do there is a heck of alot of smoke. I bought it from the original owner and she kept it in her garage.
