I guess I'd make an impression or mold of the old dash and lay it up into that, then you could make modifications such as adding gauges or switches to it

I don't "work" with fiberglass ... but I made my own gaugepanel by playing with some. It was fun - you should try it ... but understand what you're getting into before you go disco'ing the factory gauges.

I used the old gaugepanel + bezel & filled the area between w/ foam:

A dremel tool & sandpaper for shaping - some fiberglass & resin ... it took some time, but turned out okay for my first shot at it. There's some pics of it around here somewhere.

if you're new to composites, you should buy the book, "fiberglass & other composite materials" (revised and updated edition) by Forbes Aird. it should easily answer any question you have short of where to buy the raw materials.
