You have to remove the belt. Lower the alternator and release belt tension.
I forget what size open faced wrench i used, but you remove the 4 screws on the pulley.
What's going to happen if you don't release the belt tension is that pulley for the fan is going to pop off of the spindle and possibley damage the belt and you're going to have to lower the alternator to put it back on.
It is easy. Don't remove the alt. Just adjust it down.
