Driver side door lock won't lock with the key

So I just got done with work, and I went out to my car and used my key to unlock the door and my alarm went off. This is the first time my alarm has gone off sense I have owned the car. I didn't know how to shut it off, but figured it out. Well now I can't lock my car with the key, on the driver side.

Do you think it was just a coincidence that the lock happened to wear out just as my alarm was going off? Is there any cheap way to fix the lock? or do I have to buy a new lock?

from my experience, the contact points in the lock for the alarm are probably shot, as is the lock itself. you will have to replace the whole mechanisim, which can be done rather inexpensively if you dont mind taking the door panel off and doing it yourself.
