Door latch question

On my supra the previous owner somehow broke or messed up the latch for the drivers door. You can push it or slam it shut but it does not latch or lock. It sounds like metal on metal contact when slammed.

What should I look into? Would I have to get a "new" latch from the junkyard?

Any help on what I should do?

Thanks

You'll have to open up the drivers door and see what kind of damage is done before you can even begin to repair it.

The door panel was hard to get off, especially while being delicate since there is a wasp nest by the hinges...

I am going to the junkyard to see if they have a door I could use. Did toyota use the same doors from 86.5-92?

Thanks

I think the only difference was the side view mirrors, they were changed for the 89s and up.

Okay thanks. Couldn't find any doors at the junkyard so I am not sure what to do. I have the door panel off and the whole assembly doesn't seem to work properly...

If your sheetmetal is fine, don't swap doors for just the latch, that's just backwards.

Remove your latch, and find out why it's not working about it. If it is indeed the latch itself, grab one from the junkyard. If not that, buy from the dealer. It's probably not TOO much, and I'd rather have new parts, myself.

I wouldn't buy the whole door, just the mechanisms inside the door.

I will take it apart and see what I can do. It seems the part that latches onto the door stop is jammed.

Thanks

The door closes now, the latch was all gummed up.

Now the door is locked, shut. Its all corroded so the door cannot unlock. How can we unlock it now? Just keep messing with the linkage hoping it will give enough to unlock?

Thanks
