Correct way to install valve stem seals

One thing that I just thaught of that could have contributed to my previous engine using so much oil.
How hard is it to install the valve stem seals incorrectly?

When I checked them there was a small gap, maybe 1 mm, at the bottom of all of them.

Would that be sufficient to allow the oil leakage as they may not have been pressed down firmly enough upon installation?
How much force is needed to press them on & do they have to be lubricated or just pressed on dry?

That small gap is normal as far as I know. It's to allow you to get them off. There is no mention in the TSRM of lubricating because they're not a sliding or moving part. Once they're installed, a bit of lube for the valve stems wouldn't hurt I think.
