Coolant leak.

I will be pulling off heat shields tomorrow to find exact location but I want to see if you all know any reasons or things to look for. I have a coolant leak, from what I can tell the leak is coming from somewhere around the rear of the turbo mani. I cant really tell because it is hidden by the heat shield that is back there. The odd thing is that it only leaks after boosting. If I keep the car out of boost it never loses a drop. Any ideas?

Mods move if in wrong section.

Thanks,
James

The turbo mani was loose. I tightened it and it no longer leaks. Coolant in the turbo mani screams BHG right? I am not over heating and there is no smoke at all.

Not sure what you mean by 'turbo mani' but, if you're talking about the exhaust manifold then yes. The common cause for coolant there is BHG. It could be something else though.

If you suspect a BHG, keep an eye on your overflow resevoir level. Check it every morning before you start the car. If the level is dropping then you're losing coolant.

Keep an eye on your oil. If it looks like chocolate milk or if the level starts to rise when you haven't added any oil. Then you're looking at a BHG.

Look at the coolant in your radiator. If it's dark, either a BHG or it's just old nasty coolant that needs to be changed.

Look at your oil cap. If you see coolant...VERY likely a BHG.

Get a coolant system pressure tester. They are great in helping diagnose a BHG and/or coolant leaks in general.

That's all I got for ya right now man. It's midnight and I'm pooped. Someone else will probably chime in; but, if no one does........there are TONS of threads on diagnosing a BHG!

Good luck! :)

oh im losing coolant, but none in the oil. I think maybe the leaks may be an excuse. But I will be keeping a much closer eye on it the next few days. gonna check my oil cap and rad now. Thanks for the reply.

okay, no coolant on the oil cap, coolant is a nice neon green. I cant seem to make it leak again.......it did steam for for 20 mins or so but I think that was just condensation in the exhaust because i revved the engine and got it to spit in my garage, it did not smell, taste or look like coolant.

I don't know if im following here..You have a coolant leak and it quit leaking when you tightened the exhaust manifold?

My bet is any number of coolant hoses close to the exhaust manifold if it is leaking(not into the exhaust).

Or you're losing coolant and think it's burning?

I'd rent or buy a pressure tester either way.

Yeah, I was leaking coolant in the area of the exhaust manifold (the rear of it) I noticed the bolts were loose so I re-tightened them and the leak is now non existant. It was really hard to see where EXACTLY the leak was coming from but it was right under the rear of the exhaust/turbo manifold and I so far have failed to find any culprit hoses.

That is a very common place to develop a leak.

One that catches people sometimes is the one behind the head.

Good job tracking it down!
