Cleaning the evaporator

In the TSRM, it specifically states NOT to use water to clean the evaporator http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?S=AC&P=33

Can someone tell me why it would be a bad idea to do this? As long as you have the refrigerant port and suction port capped, and make sure not to get water INSIDE the evaporator, why couldn't you say, soak the whole thing in hot soap and water? My evaporator is disgustingly filthy. I used a commercially available foaming solvent ( http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/ww...ch&Ntt=2rzw3&N=0&GlobalSearch=true&sst=subset ) but there is STILL crap inside it.

Also, has anyone tried to mock up a cabin filter for our HVAC system?

Thanks for any help!

Purpose of a cabin filter is to capture dust particles, correct? If so, would it be a good idea clean out the system using compressed air to spray into one of the vents, using a vacuum at another, open vent?

They don't want you pressure spraying it is all. Doing what you suggest will be fine.

I had a cabin filters for years, both inside and out. Out was a pain but less of a pain than cleaning the evap.

jetjock, what filter did you use (assuming you are saying you used one in your supra)? I don't think cars even started coming with them until the early 2000's. I assume you found one that fit or trimmed one?
