cherry red intercooler piping

i was driving my car around and everything seemed to be good and temperature was fine and all but but i smelt something wierd almost like burnt rubber.. so i popped my hood and the intercooler piping right where it connects to the turbo and is right by the exhaust mani was cherry red smoking in a little spot . the piping looked to be just barley touching the exhaust mani but shouldnt it be made to withstand that heat?

my dads friend had this problem with one of his trucks a while back and he said that it had something to do with the catalytic converter being blocked/clogged. it was either that or something else in the exhaust had been clogged i just don't remember right now sorry.

what if i hollow the cat out for the time being until i get a test pipe.. and also why would a cat cause that to get that hot to like almost light on fire?

It doesn't let the exhaust gas out if it's clogged up............that's the only thing I can think of.

I've heard of people cleaning out a catalytic converter and I guess it does the same thing as removing one. Test pipes aren't expensive though.

yea haha also i found the problem.. my oil feed line is right up against my exhaust mani and oil is coming out it looks like the rubber melted and is coming right out of the stainless braid.. it dripped right onto the intercooler hose.

and exhaust problem wont overheat intercooler piping only exhaust piping.

Speaking of the 'test pipe', could anyone recommend a brand, and where I could find one... I've been looking but I guess I'm not looking in the right place.

s7mgte: good chance your piping is getting that hot because not enough oil is getting to your turbo
james: your local exhaust shop can fabricate one for you since its only a 12" or so piece of pipe. saves you some money on shipping

Wouldn't a test pipe cause a CEL or is that to the newer OBDII car?

As for that heat problem on the pipe. Try heat wrapping maybe and check the turbo for problems.

You best hope you haven't fried your turbo with the fubar'd oil line.

I have a test pipe for sale, it is a bic test pipe, brand new. I couldn't use it because i needed to make a custom test pipe. Ill be posting shortly in the for sale thread.
