bhg, but still reliable

my 7mge started showing signs of a bhg, since mid july the worst symptom was overheating but that was fixed with a new radiator cap and thermostat and it doesnt overheat anymore. but i fill the radiator every so often, tested positive for co2 in the radiator, waterfall noise behind the firewall, sluggish engine speed. but it idles perfectly at around 700, doesnt misfire, no leaking hoses or anything, it runs perfectly fine aside from those symptoms. i drive it everyday, and its unusually reliable, is this normal?

is there a predictable time that i have left? i have a 1jz ready to be dropped in soon.

also, how much do na cams go for?

i don't think that is too out of line for an n/a...i always hear about BHG on n/a's being like that. just make sure that water doesn't find its way into your oil...that's when you will be going kaboom and putting a rod through your block.

anyway im pretty sure my prelude has a bad head gasket...you should see the white smoke that thing produces...but it doesn't over heat...no power loss...idles and drives well with no misfire....and still start in -40 weather( a real selling point for some Canadians). mind you its a honda and they just don't die...no matter what you do to them. off topic but you don't even need to put oil in them...(ask me how i know ;))

Sounds similar to my situation, but I don't know what's really going on in my engine. I'll submit it for evaluation here, since this seems an appropriate thread.

It usually starts up fine, though cold weather makes it noticeably harder. I don't get any white smoke, but I do get a noticeable bit of blue smoke on start-up if the car's been sitting for a couple days. One member who listened to it said it sounds like it's not firing all the cylinders. It has a stable idle, about 1200 when cold and 700 when warmed up, although at lower idle you can feel a little bit of a shake (if you look at the engine, you'll be able to see it) but not violent or anything. New plugs/wires/cap/rotor don't help the idle. The power's like a 4-cyl is in the car, the fuel consumption's like a big block 8 is in the car, and until the oil's thoroughly warmed the pressure gauge reads about 37, with 12ish after the oil's heated. I do have the waterfall sound behind the dash, but I've never burped the system and the coolant level's steady.

The overflow bottle never overflows, though I've had to add water twice in 4 years. There's no white smoke, no milky oil, none of the usual signs I can tell without a coolant tester. The coolant itself on visual inspection is the usual radioactive green, transparent. Though last time I looked, it almost seemed as if it had some sort of oil thing going on, just a trace amount. By this I mean the kind of thing you get when rainwater collects in a parking lot and the oils and dirt on the pavement makes that rainbow-ish effect on the top of the water.

The head has to come off anyway to replace the valve stem seals (smoke on start-up) so if it is BHG it'll get fixed in the process of that. I'm just curious what people think.

The title to this thread is an oxymoron. It's not reliable, its a ticking bomb, and its gonna blow at the worst time. You will reach a point where you do unrepairable damage. Good luck with that :3d_frown:

I agree with cuel, you save it now then you'll have a spare with some damage, let it go until it blows, you'll be looking at a lot more damage and possibly a scrap motor.

like i said i have a 1j waiting to be dropped in, i dont know anyone in my area that would want a 7mge and i have no room to store it, it most likely will end up scrapped anyways unless someone wants it, does anybody want it?

cuel, i had no intention on replacing the head gasket, because this motor isnt part of the setup im going for

this possibly might be the last month it will run i hope to start the 1jz project next month, so i think itll stay "reliable" till the end of this month. is anybody interested in the cams or anything? if not itll be scrapped
