Advice Installing Gaskets

Im redoing all of the gaskets on my 88 N/A. Is there any gaskets that need special primer before installing? Like coating them with oil or silicone.

Ive heard some things about FIPG, but never found out what it was.

Right now I'm doing the gaskets behind the lower metal piece (timing belt/water pump).

Also on the main seals, Ive heard about compressing them. They dont just drop in?

Any help is appreciated.

In general, no. It is either gasket or RTV, not both. FIPG is Toyota brand, it works very well in my experience. FIPG is used with gaskets, but not on gaskets, but to cover certain areas, in addition to the oil pan.

for the valve covers, put some of that FIPG on the edges. corners where the camshaft seal kinda sits. That will prevent oil leakage form there.

fipg is like a silicone substance and works great, but as far as intake gaskets,(throttle body, upper plenum, etc.) a toyota mechanic told me a long time ago to get normal chapstick, not flavored, and rub it onto both sides of the gasket surface. you will not beleive it but it works. have you ever pulled a gasket and it broke or you had to scrape it off the surface, well the chapstick will allow the gasket to be easily removed and in some cases, reused.

really noah, sounds kinda far out but i'm willing to believe. RTV works well in my expiriance. friend of mine swears by it, uses it exclusivly in his intake(tb, bov flange ect). main seals will have to be put in with alittle encouragment. grease them up good with mp grease and then you might have to beat them in(carfully) with a hammer.

That is to keep the gasket in place when holding a component something other than upright and flat. Not for sealing.
