so some of you guys followed my last maint. thread about some crazy ass knocking noise. well took it to a mechanic cause i couldnt figure out wtf. Figured out it was a loose flexplate that was causing the knock.

Well got the bolts tightened down and for a week it was pretty nice with no knock no nothin. NOW it's back to knocking again and i will either eventually get annoyed with it and tighten it down again or i will do a complete swap out with a 5 speed (since im going there anyways but i can't afford at this point waiting for tax time)

which brings me to the conclusion to this long question. What can i freakin do to keep this thing from knocking? what causes it to get loose in the first place?

P.S. who ever owned this car and rebuilt the tranny before me was a monkey..the gears that the tranny is in arent even in the right spot on the gear lables :p

once a flex plate has rattled around on the bolts, the chance of it ever staying put again is slim to none.
replace the flex-plate & bolts, and most likely the top washer thingy, and the spacer under the flex plate.
take any high points off the crank with a hand stone.
chase the threads in the crank.
loctite the bolts.
ati makes a sfi flex plate for the 7m too.

good luck

well matt i can tell you that my 340 shifts the same. i would not risk running with a loose flexplate as it will eventually throw the engine out of balance when it breaks. there is probably nothing wrong with the tranny causing this. it is the flexplate and associated hardware
