o2 sensor would be my first suspect. if you wanna check your plugs/wires start the car and pop the hood. what you're going to do is pull a wire off and listen to hear if theres a chance in the engine sound. if there is then that cylinder is operating correctly, if not then somethings up. either...
i tried 5mm and it seems to slip when i try to torque down the bolts so what size is it? or do i just need to fight with it to get it to work correctly? also, i think the first head bolt you torque might be messed up. advice on what to do with that.

well a good "test" for the thermostat is to grab the upper coolant lines and the one after the thermostat. if the one after the thermostat is cold or cooler than the upper one than the thermostat isn't allowing the coolant is circulate.
