    Be sure you used the correct walkthrough. The 86.5 and 87 wires are different than the 88-92. I have an '87 and mine work as they should but I had to dig around in order to find it.

    Strange problem

    I would start with getting the battery and alt tested first. The big parts stores will check them for free but they will have to be removed from the vehicle. This would be the simplest starting point before trying to find a lose ground.
