You can grind many many many times before doing any noticable damage to the syncros/gears.
You should have been able to shift with some rev matching and no clutch as well.
In any case, it sounds like a fun time. :(
In North America, we had a false "subfloor" that sits above the spare tire and allows us to have a flat trunk floor with a full size spare. We do lose trunk space because of it though, but can put stuff under the subfloor.
They'd fit and work perfectly on the Supra, the overall diameter is 0.1% different from stock.
If you were driving the car in snow, it's basically the perfect size to have. If you're just driving around doing day to day things, they'd be fine on the car, I think you'll find you'll lose some...
If I were you, I'd find a local fabrication shop that can do up custom pipes for your car, if they're good, I think you'll find that they're exactly what you want.
