I think your right Nick. He prolly is burning the oil out the exhaust and has an exhaust leak.
The white ash he's seing is oil, and thus that is where his missing oil is going.
I know this Doc... but just recently at GLDW @ Chicaco 2006 we had 40/40 tire pressure (front / rear) on my friends mk2.
We went to the setup that I posted, and he knocked almost 3 tenths off the time.
The code is due to the fact the car is running lower than 500rpms (iirc).
Sounds to me like you have a BOV venting to atmosphere or for some reason the car is running mad rich.
