An aftermarket one is more efficient. It will create cooler air going into your cylinders. You can get an intercooler and piping kit for probably $300 off ebay. Plus an aftermarket one looks sweeter chillin behind the bumper. Just my 2 cents though.

Follow the lower radiator hose to the block and you'll find the thermostat housing. Take off the hose and then it is 2 12mm bolts holding it on there. You can get to it from the bottom. It isn't hard at all the change out.
Not on the rear. It pretty much depends on the wheel and what offset you have. The mkiv tt rear wheel inside is pretty close to the bottom of the strut.
I picked up a set of mkiv tt wheels for $400 and falken ziex 512 tires for $400. So, 17x8 235/45 front and 17x9.5 275/40 rear for $800 plus another $60 for mounting and balancing.
