Pacesetter is very quiet and IIRC 2.5 inch. It was on my car from the previous owner. I cut off the muffler to get some more sound out of it and it was still quiet.

Look on the out side of the down pipe and see if there are dark spots where oil may have burned. If thee oil inside the down pipe you would at least know its an internal problem on either the motor or the turbo.

Did you look at and around the down pipe and manifold area for oil residue? Is the exhaust housing v-band outlet? Could you pull the down pipe and see if there is oil residue inside there?

If you cleaned the AFM it is likely the problem. Does the car act up when the weather is rainy? Then clear up when its nice out? Happened to me until one day the car wouldn't start.
