    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Today: Got ALL my parts in today! Full gasket kit including, you guessed it, every gasket and seal I could possibly need, even the distributor O ring! There were no "partial kits" that had everything except a head gasket. Might have to ebay a few of my leftover head gaskets (I now have 4!)...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Not a fan of grey but you're right about leak spotting. Black is still an option Ian!

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

I'm not wanting anything that's too flashy either and would consider "Cast Iron" a nice neutral look! I'll have a look at it but think that's probably what I'll end up doing. I'm not planning on painting anything else except the block, simply because rust is not a colour I'm fond of!

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

The idea certainly has merit! So you don't worry about etch priming the aluminium then? My plans at this stage are to paint the block seperately so I may just have to mask off the areas I don't want paint on - won't kill me! For colour choices, I'm thinking stock black or something a bit more...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

So it just evaporates from places it shouldn't be then? Sounds like a plan. So you don't bother taping things off then? I'm thinking I don't want paint in a few places so would likely need to mask those off (specifically thinking of the deck).

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Minor Update: Finally got the block cleaned up, CRC'd and mounted back on the engine stand. It's spent the last week and a bit in the trunk of my car so it's good to finally have the proper ride hight again! Now, for a really stupid question: The block has had most of the paint stripped off...

Valvetrain Snap Ring: Do I need it?

Yeah, it's not a real fun job. I did it on my 5M head and there are only 12 valves, although I only did the DIY valve lapping, no grinding with a machine. My motor was fairly high mileage that had lots of face/seat wear but nowhere near enough guide wear to need replacing. I think the motor...

    Kyle's World!

You and your area codes... Eh, 03 FTW!!! Nah, just doesn't have the same ring to it I'm afraid.

OK now that i'm putting it back together FINALLY...

He's referring to metal head gaskets. You can order them in various different thicknesses and the construction of the gasket sometimes incorporates a "bead" around the combustion chamer. The idea is that when machining head/block, you raise compression. Getting a thicker head gasket can...

Valvetrain Snap Ring: Do I need it?

I think you'll find the new bushings will probably have them already. Also, if you're having the head fully rebuilt (and I don't know how common it is to need the valve guides replaced), I'd say there's a good chance the machinist will be able to get all of that for you.

Valvetrain Snap Ring: Do I need it?

No snap ring I'm aware of. It could be talking about the ring that holds the valve guide in the head... If it's that, you don't need it unless replacing the valve guides.

A few idle issues, and running problems

Joplin is near the Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas border. Yeah, cruise would have been fun!

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Yeah, it's getting a full clean and anti-rust today at lunchtime. I'm actually surprised it's faired so well in the boot of my car so far! I had another look at it today and was having a bit of a laugh at how bad the pics looked vs real life. The "pitting" was just a couple of lumps of...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

No, actually that's machining dust left over - I checked it today and the spots and vertical marks wiped off without wetting my finger! I forgot to mention that it hasn't been cleaned AT ALL yet. Not even a squirt with compressed air from what I can see. I still need to attack it with some...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

This just in! Rebuilding a 7M, even a stock standard, non-turbo, is freaking expensive!!! It's going to cost another $400+ for gasket set, bearings and rings. Oi!!! That's everything I need to put the engine back together though and is probably a fairly decent price (the gasket set is around...

Coolant hose on the back of the head and a stubborn fuel line

Lots and lots of patience! You might want to see if removing the hose on the other side is easier. I'm assuming it's the one that goes to the heater you're talking about? If it's not that one, there's the one coming from the water pump area that was difficult for me to get off and my engine...

OK Head is off, does this look like any messed up valves??

Worst case scenario if it's rod knock: Replace crank replace rod bearings replace main bearings (just because you might as well) replace one or more rods damage to cylinder block due to bearing pieces floating around in the engine That last one can include cylinder bore damage...

A few idle issues, and running problems

Glad you got it sorted out! Where abouts in MO are you? I used to live in Joplin.
