To answer your question i didn't do a thing when i installed the shims, I just pulled the pads greased the shims and reinstalled the pads and so far they are as quite as can be.
MB had so many complaints about brake squeals with the S series they issued a voluntary recall to have this redesigned brake shims added to the calipers.
I have tried two different brand brake pads now stoptech and ceramic power and have had issues with both.
