The only real difference is that the JZA70 has a thread in the bottom for the temp switch for the hydro fan. They are also about 4mm wider so don't try to swap to tanks like I did, they don't fit!!!!!! Why Toyota changed them that amount I have no idea.
I have just finished yesterday repairing mine. The difference between the 7m and the Jz is the JZ is wider and contains a buzzer for when you leave the key in the ignition and open the door. Mine had shorted out and blown the large diode that is in it.
Here is a pic of my car today. I have almost finished my 1j conversion. I decided to keep the ealier front as most people change to the later one. I also made the front lip.

You will need the sump from a jza supra, either type 70 or 80. The engine mounts may be different on the VVTI. I know they are different on the
2ZVVTI Something to do with the pressure lines to the head.
If you use a JZX100 front cut, all that will be there except the correct sump.
My mate in Sydney has done the wiring for a VVTI into a Cressida and has worked it all out. Said it is not that hard. I have driven it and it is cool.
I want one for my own supra BUT they are almost unobtainable in Australia and when they do come in they seem to be dearer that a 2j and more...
