sounds like a boost leak to me. Even though you replaced the section with the BOV, check to see if you have a leak elsewhere in the intercooler piping.
this would cause your car to run rich since metered air is now escaping and not making it to the engine.

A lot of stuff such as the charcoal canister, egr system, etc can be removed if you are not concerned about emissions.
As long as you know how much was taken off the block and head, just pick the hg that will give you as close-to-stock compression as possible. For example, if you took a total of 3mm of material off the block and head, add 3mm to the stock gasket size to get the new gasket thickness.
