Thats the first thing i assumed after I installed a new starter and still had the problem. Come to think of it, there was a spade connector on the orginal starter when i recieved it. I bet whoever owned it in japan had to do the same thing.

So what was the solution? I have the exact same problem, 89 NA 5 speed chassis and the tach wont work. The wiring is correct, i have a signal all the way to the cluster plug and neither the 1J or my converted NA tach will work.
Another option is to run 2 standard 30A bosch relays. I use one relay on each fan on my FAL's. Anotner perk to this method is it does provide some redundancy if one of the relays fails.
