I get the same clunk that your talking about. I have a LSD. I set the park brake and put the trans in gear, I could rotate the drive shaft about a 1/4 inch. The U-joints seem fine but the free play seems to come from the rear, but I'm not 100% sure. BTW I have a 1 piece aluminum drive shaft...

Did you check the bushing on the end of the shifter where the shifter goes into the trans.

I've done some searches and still have a question. My 87 has a one piece aluminum drive shaft. I have a vibration ( you can't really feel it but you can hear it ) that starts around 40 MPH or so. It's NBD but I got up to 100-120 ( on a very lonley stretch of road ) and the vibrations got alot...
