What is a good tire size for handling/cornering on my stock 16"s.

I can't afford wheel upgrades yet and need tires on the front hence threads so I'm wondering what a good handling threshold is.

My best guess would be 215/40/16 but again I could be way off.

Please lmk.

Edit,
My buddy was telling me today to go wide like 225 and anything under 40 on a 16" wheel isn't a good idea. He said something like it can effect the speedo reading and I found it hard to believe..

I'd go with 205/45/16

As far as your discussion with your buddy, anything smaller than the 225/50/16 OEM tire will show a faster speedo reading.

With the car's transmission moving at the same rate, two differently size tires will result in different speedo readings. A larger tire will cause the speedometer to show a slower speed. A smaller tire will be opposite, causing the speedometer to show a faster speed.

For example, say you're going 60mph on the OEM tire,....if you change to a 225/40/16, a smaller tire, at the same speed, the speedo will read 64.6mph.

Thanks man that makes sense now!

So I'll be handling alot better with the 205/45/16 but speedo will show a lil faster.

Good thing my speedo's broken:biglaugh:

heres my latest shoes.

pics are of a 17x10 +40 with a 280/680 slick (measures 294mm wide). will be replaced with a 300/640 which measures 305mm wide

for those weight watches like me - wheel and tire in pic = 40.5 lbs

I'm running bridgestone potenza re960's 225-50-16's on sawbladez and ran them on my old mustang rims. Unless you have a wierd offset or lowered it more then 2" I don't see any problems with them rubbing.

Question about tire pressure, probably the best thread for it :): Anyone have experience with 235/40/18 and 265/35/18 ? About how much would be needed to get even wear?

I want to fit 17x 10.5 or 11" but no clue what the offset would be, I will be at least trying to fit 295 or 300s on these wheels. I will be rolling \ flare \flare fenders. I have not seen anything on here like it yet. Does anybody have any set up close to this?? I live in socal so warming up these tires on a hot sunny day will be no problem at all. Can this be done or am I just dreaming?

For reference, this is an 18x10.5+22 w/275/35/18. The fender is rolled and flared out. 295s could be mounted, but the car would have to be raised significantly, so that the tire does not hit the fender when the suspension compresses; otherwise, if I wanted to keep the ride height the same with 295s, the 10.5" wheel would need an offset in the high 40s

^^^^^^^^^^ -edit-

with the 18x10.5+22 w/275/35/18 << that sits really flush, now if I get 17x12.5+35 with 315/35/17 with fender flares how do you think that will look?

NT 01

17x11 +35
315/35/17

It might be a bit hard finding these wheels though.. I will be flaring the fenders like MAD, but still not sure if I can fit the 315s. How close will the +40 to my shocks?? any rubbing issues?

315s on an 11" wheel? If I answered, I'd be wandering into unchartered territory. At least unchartered by me. FYI, a 315 tire is actually wider than an 11" wheel (which is about 305mm wide). My suggestion is either buy or borrow a 17x11+35 wheel. After you mount it, then you'll be able to calculate what tire will fit the car.

Check this MKIV out. It has 18x12s w/295 tires at the rear

I read the nitto website wrong, it was 12.5 not 11, 11 was the width of the tires itself. I doubt I can stick 12" without any serious modifications.

has anybody stuck 315s on their supras before?? these things are monstrous, I'm sure socal owners wont have a problem with any heating issues though. I would love to see how 11 or 12" wheels fit sit.

btw rodel on the previous picture are those NT 01s? the tread styling kind of looks like it.

My rears, in my sig picture, are 10.5+18 ( w/245/35/19s), coupled with 15mm spacers is equivalent to an 11"+9.

Yes, the tires on the Mag Blue CE28 are NT 01.

The setup I want is xxr 962's... 18x8.5 in front and 18x9.5 in back

I want the widest tire I can fit on this wheel for the rear so maybe a 275, or 285 if possible, and a 235 in front

is it possible to fit a 285 on the rear for a 18x9.5?
