WOW thats hardcore haha.. It looks like her insurance will cover it but i'm worried they are going to just try to total my car since it screwed up my paint bumper hood mirrors and a ton of other stuff since my engine parts were in the front part of the garage which was on fire. With the age of our cars does anyone know a blue book value for our cars since they are classics now?

That sucks big time. There are a few places that give values for our cars: NADA Classics, Hagerty, and another one that I believe starts with a "V" but I can never remember the name. They will most likely total it if the damage is that bad, and probably try to low ball you since "its just an old Toyota..." If I were you I would make sure her insurance pays out very well, I would be pissed especially if it was something as stupid as this.

People like that piss me off... There's a shop on the military base here where you can pay a small fee to rent a lift or bay and work on your car yourself. They have two ASE mechanics working there full time just to run the place, help out, and give advice and the one guy is just a jerk. I asked him to come over and check my lift points for the lift so I don't drop the car and he told me "well if you do drop it then it's one less Toyota I have to see" with no sort of sarcasm or anything. Then he sees my bottles of Redline gear oil and told me I should have gone with Amsoil instead and just walks away. All he talks about is his corvette which I've never actually seen there... I don't like that guy. The other guy is cool, he told me about his Datsun 280 and also told me he was surprised to see that I hadn't ruined the car since I am young.

If your car was in really good shape I would keep insisting that fact and pull up other clean Supras for sale like yours and use them as comparison points/leverage. Look up some of the posts a member "Adjuster" has on here for people dealing with insurance stuff. I don't think he is online anymore, but there is a lot of useful information in his posts considering he is an insurance adjuster.

Yeah, checked wastegate.. all seems good, pressure tested system... is tight.

At idle, the intake impeller does not spin. Rev up... starts to spin... if you just tap the impeller.. it stops spinning. Really strange.

Everything we test is coming out proper... the only thing acting odd is the turbo itself. Alamo turbo does a "side" test.. where if you give it just a tiny bit of side thrust.. it should still spin freely. This one doesn't. It almost locks right up.
Did the exact same test on 3 garrets sitting nearby.. they all spun freely.

Starting to think the turbo has an issue...

My 6262, the 6765 and 6266 didn't spin at idle either. I don't have a habit of sticking my finger in a turbo that's moving so I can't comment on that bit lol.

My turbo has about 700mi on it now with no issues. 6266 is more like 3k, no worries there either. 6765 blew up but was ran hard with no oil.

If they decide to total your car or whatever let me know if you want to get rid of any parts. Id take the drive to do it lol.

And in des moines, I get compliments all the time. apparently the older guys think these cars are hawt for what they are. Then again e85 and a loud fuel pump with a fuel sump may give away that there is a few little things done to it.

Haha no matter what ill be keeping the car either to rebuild or as a parts car. You can find e85 in des moines? I live near a drag strip so i can get high octane pretty easy but I haven't seen e85 anywhere close.

Helps to have bills for the parts.. helps immensely actually...

My 1987 NA MK3 got totaled off. I bought it for 450.00, bought an engine for 300.00, bought a clutch for 300.00 (no bill for the 2 parts) and then swapped the engines. My body was missing body trim and had a little rust starting on the quarter panels. I had classic insurance on my car and walked the adjuster through all the car and parts involved, quoting actual numbers (that were verifiable by online sources) and pointed out what was for sale and what it takes to get my car to where it was. (It helps that I have a huge folder of bills for my 88). In the end, they gave me 8700.00 for the car, let me buy it back for 800.00 because they acknowledged I was an "enthusiast". I was pretty lucky regarding this because the guy was a specialist on classic cars and knew how rare the cars are getting.

As a side note... MK3 owners are like beaten down kids that never get self confidence. They accept people's responses that... oh.. that car is only worth 3000.00. It kinda pisses me off. The wheels on a good Supra usually cost 1800.00 or more alone! All those mods and upgrades take time and money. No damn way I would accept that my car is worth 6000.00 cause its "mint". Fuck that! The sooner MK3 owners wise up and realize the true value of the car the better.

It may have its warts and flaws (all fixable btw), but the production numbers were FAR less than a Corvette. They were rare when new.. they are much rarer now.

The only point I will concede on is that the car has rust issues in certain areas and the "cheap" price leads to "cheap" builds which generally end up with pile of crap cars on the road. A properly built MK3 that was done right and clean just sold about 4 months in my area for 27,500.00. If anybody realizes the true value of the car, they will recognize... yes.. there are people out there willing to pay the money (and they actually understand the car) and no... people wont buy your car while there are better ones selling for dirt cheap.

... I saw a Dodge Dart that I could have bought for 500.00 when I was a teen... and had sit in the garage and been happy today with it... but hindsight is 20-20. Imagine... in 10 years...

blue book doesn't really apply to these cars. NADA doesn't go beyond 94 Supra (I believe.. not 100% familiar with that and don't know what other things adjusters use to come up with values). Talk to the appraiser and tell them what a sweet ride it was and then list everything you did to it (if you can back it up with bills and/or a very vivid description). Remember.. time also counts. If you keep your mouth shut.. they will do their job. (which is... save their boss as much money as possible)

oh yeah... a new engine is worth 4500.00. Even if you paid 600.00. I would argue that one to the end.. lol.

Sorry... old guy rambling. Just get a little buzzed when a Supra dies and a Supra owner potentially gets peed on. Tired of everyone walking with their heads hung.. when they should be walking straight and proud. We are a shrinking group... and should be proud of owing a car that people might see once or twice a year.. not every single day.

See, now usually when you want to light something on fire you CONTAIN it and then you light it and you stand by with a fire extinguisher
