The biggest reason to start shaving pounds is to save your transmission. If any of you are pushing over 500whp/tq youd be very weary about how much more you wanna push it. weight+lots of torque = kiss your r154 goodbye. and last i checked Marlin crawler parts are on backorder so youre fucked.

W58s are lighter and can handle around 400hp. Definitely something weight losers should look into.

If weight is important you chose the wrong car.... :nono:

The Mk3 is a Heffalump at best even stripped down to a noisy hot rattly PoS with none of the original creature comforts, conversely it's best feature is you can keep ALL in place and still smoke most of the cars on the road you come across when properly built.

Of course this means you need more than a $25 budget but this comes back to the wrong car statement...

what happens after 400hp and is it really something anyone should look into if they already have a R154?

It breaks, that's what haha

it's not a major difference in weight, but for those that are hardcore and don't play on running super high numbers, it should be something they might want to look into.

The parts needed would be just like an auto to manual swap, minus the pedals. That means tranny, flywheel, shift fork, clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, tranny mount, and front half of the driveshaft.

it would be a good idea to go with a lighter flywheel and possibly a cf driveshaft for W58s. You would DEFINITELY need a stronger pressure plate and clutch, as the stock won't hold anything , even stock boost...

Not sure I follow... Tyler's car is still on the same R154 as far as I know:

Well shuts me up. How come he went with the auto, was it purely for drag racing reasons, or did he break the R154?

Auto's always best for turbocharged drag racing.

On the original topic:

For me, the first 30-40 lbs or so of weight reduction really needs to come out of the driver's seat. :p

Yeah when I break my r154 tranny GM auto here I come. Money will determine how long I wait but w58... You'd have to pay me too drop that in. plus it'd break that thing pretty quick I imagine.

If you have an R154 you'd have to be nuts to swap to a W58. It's not light enough to warrant that.

The W58 is about a 40 pound weight savings. If you have low power goals and need a cheap transmission for a swap you can certainly get by with it at long as you stay under 400whp and don't launch it aggressively.

If you're swapping in a W58 over a 154 for weight you might as well pull out your GTE and replace it with a B series honda block while you're at it.

...or a 3sgte? Depending on purpose, of course, but a very viable option. ;)

The 3S is an awesome motor, but it's just a 2J with 2 less cylinders (oversimplification). It's akin to what a Nissan CA18 is in regard to the RBs.

A turbo K20 or F22 would be a better idea because they're a lot lighter, otherwise aluminum block v8. However, if you plan on trying to extract 700whp like the JGTC guys did, then the 3S was the better option IMO (for 4cyl).

I am getting a shitty 86.5 hardtop shell and am going to UTE the bitch and chop rear quarters and overfender them with the KAZE over fenders and gut the car, doors will be skinned . cf hood . tubed front end.

Similar to this FC .

Interior will be like this

This will be a TRACK only car, and will never see the streets. I am buying the shell from a wrecking yard. This is a weight reduction.

I still want to stick an S14 VVT SR20DET into a MKIII just to piss a few people off. I would do it too... if the price of VVT SR20's wasn't so damn high. When an SR20 costs more than a 2JZGTE something is wrong in the world.

I am warming up to the LS motors though... especially since I saw an LS1 w/ harness and ECU for sale for $2500 a few days ago. I didn't know they went that low in price.

Not to mention aftermarket support for the LS motors is huge.

Heh. Well, except that I'm not joking. The first weight reduction that I'm really going to worry about is from myself. If I were 30 lbs lighter, I'm sure that a lot of things in life would be more fun, including driving.

After that initial 30 lbs, then I might start thinking about a couple hundred lbs out of the rest of the car.
