well im in the middle of a 2jz build and im trying to make sure i know all my tranny options before i make a decision. I know about the R154, getrag 6 speed and the t56 but is there any other tranny out there which has been used on the 2jz and MKIII which will hold 700 to 900 range with no problem. also looking for some comparison info on the getrag and t56 please include some swap info if you have it.

What are your intentions for the car? That should determine your transmission choice. Personally, I love the R154, although a 6th gear would be quite nice on the highway, get the rpms down to less than 2k at 75... I had a T56 in my 01 SS, it was quite possibly the best aspect of that car. Can't say much about the Getrag V160, I've never had the opportunity to drive one yet.

You might look at Bigzavs build on here, he's put a T56 on his Mk3, and I believe he has one in his Formula too...

in all honestly i have no firm direction im going with on this car starting over from the beginning again and figured y not do something new. i will most likely start going to the track and running laps but overall it will just be my everyday over powered street toy. ive got a clean slate and i hear most of the mk4 guys love there 6 speed swap, they hold a good amount of power and nothings wrong with being able to take a road trip and getting 25+ mpg.

IMO, BigZavs has the right idea.. he has a T56 (although I'm unsure of which model), and they're much cheaper than V160s new or used from what I've seen. of course, it doesn't just bolt up..

OK
a t56 is a good tranny but it still needs to be built to hold good power and aggressive driving... my t56 in my ws6 went out and i had to rebuild it with aftermarket parts... i spent about 6-700 bucks on the after market kit! which i thougth wasn't bad but this is the first tranny i have ever had to build to hold more power plus aggressive driving!

What kit did you end up going with?

Yes, from what I understand, they'll only hold around 650-700hp before you're stressing them out a bit too much. That said, they also used a T56 in the Cobras and Vipers from the factory, so they can be built to handle a LOT.

I got a premade adapter plate that uses a stock A340e bellhousing to connect a T56 to a 2JZ, it cost me $240.

Ive also bought a gearbox and concentric slave which should be here in about a week. Once Ive got everything in hand I'll be able to make some proper measurements for clutches/shifters/tailshafts/etc.

That is....as long as the gearbox guy hasnt ripped me off...which Im still slightly worried about.

heres a little info on the t56

The transmission uses a hydraulic reverse pull clutch (like the r154), except for the Cobra which is mechanical and had an 11 inch clutch disk (which SUCKS with aftermarket clutches). The synchromesh is made up of brass for the GM and Ford applications, and stainless steel in the Dodge application.
the 93 gm is more sought after due to the really low 1st gear, makes for a better launch susposedly, but has a lower torque rating, and as noted the mustang t56 has a coarse spline clutch, where the gm and dodge use the same clutch, but d/s differes, but as domestics have replaceable u joints its easy to swap the yoke over.

No it doesnt. It operates more like a W58 than an R154.

There isnt even a hole in the bellhousing to accommodate a clutch fork. Like I said, it works with a concentric slave cylinder, there is a gap at the back of the bellhousing to allow the hydraulic lines through.
