Quick Q about "necessity" of 12V Fuel Pump Mod!?

Yes I have a box of 12 V 30 amp fuses, just need the right holder

Thats the one place left to check. I'll definitely stop by there and see what they have. I'll probably go after I order a new gas tank hard line from Toyota, as I bent the one on the tank today. Gave it 3 shots of PB Blaster and waited in between and nothing would get that thing loose, and it finally just twisted and kinked the line:nono:

The hardline going into the tank? That's not replaceable.:( Aside from that fact, it sounds like you were trying to spin the wrong side. The SOFT LINE side is the one you need to spin, not the hardline/tank side. ;)

Well crap. All I know is, I/we had two different wrenches holding the two different-sized nuts on either side. We meant to hold one and twist the other. If I remember correctly (there was 3 of us, all cursing and covered in gas), we had determined what you said (after messing with both), which one to spin, when all of a sudden the tank-side hardline gave way and just bent. The whole assembly (both sides of the nuts) would shift and sway and we tried our best not to damage it.

I'll go and see if I can purchase a new pump bracket, of which this hardline seems to be attached to/part of. (thanks to ForcedTorque's invaluable pics)

Maybe it was Shaeff's thread where I read that this is common. Maybe not, but I have read it somewhere. If the dealer is too high, maybe you can find one in a part out thread. Use that one as a mock up/practice piece.

^ I give all the credit to Shaeff! I just followed his instructions, and took a bunch of pictures along the way. My thinking was that the pictures would help at least 1/2 as many people through it as Shaeff has helped with the instructions. Too many times, the threads in the tech section have no pictures. There were several parts of the job I didn't understand going in, but were very simple once I actually saw it. Hopefully the pictures will give folks a little more confidence in what they are doing. In the future, I'm gonna photograph almost everything I do to my car, and post some more threads like that.

Another question! I hope this thread helps others in the future....

I got my new hanger today, and noticed something I haven't seen in any other thread/pic. What is this blue wire on the back of the hanger? From FT's pics, it looks like the short black wire on the front of the hanger connects to the black Walbro wire, and the long blue/green wire from the top of the hanger connects to the red Walbro wire, but what does this do? If nothing, is it OK to just leave it hanging there? Thanks

PS. Sliding that little metal retainer onto the fuel filter is just about the most frustrating thing I've ever undertaken.

^^^ Those would be your power wires for your fuel pump. Better hook both of them up to your new pump, or your new pump won't work. ;)

...it looks like the short black wire on the front of the hanger connects to the black Walbro wire, and the long blue/green wire from the top of the hanger connects to the red Walbro wire...

You are correct. The short blue wire is the ground, and where you connect your black wire to. The long blue wire is your +12V, and where you connect the red wire to.

I'm a bit confused...you said I was correct in saying the black Walbro wire connects to the black hanger wire on the front, but you then say the black Walbro wire connects to the short blue hanger wire on the back? I have 3 hanger wires...black, long blue, short blue, and 2 walbro wires, black and red. I understand having power and ground wires, but when its 3 versus 2 I'm at a bit of a loss.

This would help me...I've numbered the wires I have to connect, pairing them up would help!

I am pretty sure the 1 (blue 12+) wire goes to the red on the pump, then black and short blue with black box (resistor?) go to the black on the pump. If I remember they need to be spliced together.
Someone correct me if I am wrong!

A tiny bit off topic:

Should I expect to see a rise in fuel pressure after applying the 12v mod? Setting the fuel pressure to TSRM specs (23-30 vac line on) my car doesn't like to idle and sounds lopy. AFRs range from 15.5-16.5. When I set it to around 35-40 PSI, AFRs return to 14.7~ range and idle returns to normal and smooth.

Thanks very much. I figured this is what deabionni was saying, but I don't see any mention of splicing the two together in any install guides, which left me confused. Can anyone else verify this?

has any body ever done the 12mod rewire with a switch to turn the relay on when you are like tuning or racing and turn it off for like every day driving. or will this mess up the stock fuel pump resistor

Damn...I was hoping you'd know:icon_razz

Perhaps, if its not to be used, I can just tape it off and forget about it? Someone in here suggested it has to be spliced into the black hanger wire, but I know in your install (and Shaeff's I don't think mentioned it), you didn't have to do such a thing.

I'm a bit confused too. My hanger only had two wires (didn't see a black wire in your first pic), so installing my Walbro was pretty easy.
