PS pump pulley removal

I just figured out that my leak is powersteering fluid from the pressure hose on the pump. The problem is that its not actually the banjo bolt that is loose; its the big hex that goes into the pump itself. And of course, I cant get to it without the pulley removed. I've got the pulley nut off so is there any way that I can get it off without a pulley remover. Is it even possible to get a remover in there with the stock fan in place?

I'm soooo glad that its powersteering fluid and not motor oil :biggrinbo

Huh. I've pulled that fitting with the pulley on and the pump in the car. Piece of cake.

With the pressure hose already out I take it? If yes...I cant get my hose loose because it just turns with that fitting. Removing the pulley would allow for actual room to get a wrench in there. I had everything out and ready to go thinking I could just easily get the pulley off, wrong.

Yes, with the hose off. Looks like you have a different issue. Can't get a crow's foot in there from the back? If not go buy a cheap puller. That said bryanintexas makes an excellent point.

edit: turns with the fitting? I don't get it. Hold the line and back the banjo out.

Next time I pull it apart, I'll probably just do as bryanintexas stated. About the fitting turning.....its real hard to get ahold of the line, keep it in place and crank on the banjo bolt line. If I get a pulley remover and get that off, I'll have enough clearance to get a crows foot in there to hold the fitting in place.

had this issue before, depends on which year you have as the earlier years (I think) had a larger pulley.

change came with PPS...

the PS hose should be able to be stopped, if not...well, I had to zip mine oww with an impact, and it kinked the hose, the line is REALLY easy to replace...if the engine's out, it's absolute HELL with the engine in...

Yeah I dont really need to replace it because its not actually the hose leaking. I've got an 88 so it probably is the bigger pulley your talking about. I'm going to have to get the pulley off or I'll just end up kinking the line.

I just got done messing with it again. I rented an actual power steering pump pulley remover and it doesnt have the right size nut to go onto the pump shaft. I knew I should have just gotten the universal remover right away but was an idiot. I also attempted, but failed at getting that high pressure hose off. I just used an adjustable wrench to hold down that fitting, and then had my brother crank on the banjo bolt, but it would just slip. So tomorrow I've got to get a 21mm, I think, wrench to get a real hold of that fitting. Any other advice besides pulling the whole pump?......because I'd have to get that pressure line off anyways

if you can afford to destroy that line (if it's old, it's gonna go soon anyways), then zip if off with an impact...

if not, well, it's not going to be easy or fun, I'd pull everything I could from that side of the engine to make room, and if you have an engine house, undo the motor mounts and pull the engine up a bit and work on it that way

I was able to get a breaker bar on that from under the car YMMV

I just want to tighten that fitting up, not replace the hose. Do you know what size that fitting is? I couldnt really get down there to measure or anything, but I'm pretty sure its a 21mm??

Update: I got it off! It was as simple as removing the pump slider adjustment bracket to get enough room for a cresent wrench in there. Oh and that fitting size, its huge. The hardware store didnt have a 21mm so I got a 22mm and that still wasnt even close.
