I know about the Honda CBR, but unfortunately, haven't found any of those in the local pick n pull. the pick n pull also has no supras.

my question is, what other vehicles have 25mm shims between 2.5-3.0mm? i want to go vulture a shitload of shims so I can start a nice little collection, not to mention finish my valve adjustment. There are like 3 or 4 pick n pull's within a short drive from me, so if I can find a fairly common vehicle with these shims, I'm sure I can get a good harvest.

thanks!

heh well after searching this forum didnt turn up, i searched *another forum* that shall remain nameless.. ;)

rather than deleting this thread, i'm just gonna post that info in here in the hopes that it will someday help some other soul who only thinks to search this forum.

7M valve shim donors

If you ever struggle to find cheap or variety of shim thicknesses a little searching turns up some places you can look for shims. Most valuable is the fact that honda has shims thinner and thicker than toyota offers.

* Some common compatible valve shim donors: 16-valve 4A-G(Z)(E)
* 4A-F(E)
* 7A-FE
* 7M-G(T)E
* 3S-G(T)E
* 5S-FE (pre-'93)

SOB shims

25mm diameter Used in Honda ('79--'83 4-cylinder CB750, 900, 1000, and 1100 series engines,
and 1050 CBX 6-cylinder engines, and others), Yamaha (V-Max, and the FJ1100/1200 series),
Triumph 3- and 4-cylinder liquid-cooled motorcycle engines, and older Toyota car engines.

HotCams makes shim kits but i found they dont carry the larg sizes. Honda dealer local to me had all but 1 shim i needed and all were like aprox $5 each as compared to toyota pricing of $8+ (canadian) im not sure what the toyota shims are but i remember people saying they are arround 10 bux each.

So simply raid your local pick a part for your normal range of shims and order any thicker ones you might need.

IIRC a mod to do with the 3sgte is to use the newer mr2 shimless buckets(1zz)
but only problem is they come in 5.06-5.74mm
so milling would be needed

3sgte had a common issue with slinging shims at high rpm and when installing bigger cams

http://www.mr2forum.org/forum/index.php?/topic/13-shimless-bucket-conversion/

Iirc that's because you measure from the inside of the bucket where it touches the valve to the top of the valve shim.

Even has the math in the link you posted And to do it it's about 300+$ iirc.

If your not revving crazy high it's not nesseccary tho it will drop some weight in the valve train.

KTM, the trip would cost me about $40 round trip (gas and bridge tolls), whereas buying new shims would cost $50. still, it would be nice to start a little stockpile of shims for future purposes. I will think about heading up and doing a little harvesting. thanks for the tip!

I hate you CA people.
You get MkIII's dropped into your junk yards more often than Lindsey Lohan winds up in rehab.
Here in GA, it never happens. In fact, I believe that a Supra appearing in a Georgia pick & pull lot is listed as one of the signs of the Apocalypse...
