For the last 3-4 years i've been doing my own taxes via taxact.com or turbotax.com and there a few things that im not sure of even tho they are pretty self explanatory.

I just want to ask you guys what do u think about these websites and DIY tax return? Sometimes i think i deserve a bit more but im not sure. Anyone else do their own taxes through these sites?

Should i just go out to H&R block or something?

Dont go to h&r block they charge a fortune. I've used turbo tax software for the past couple of years, but before that I payed this accountant lady $50 to do my taxes. My taxes are pretty easy though. I just have my kids and house to write off.

Me and a guy at work used http://www.efile.com/ and he already got his money...he got direct deposite though.

Easy as hell and free....the IRS website links you to it to do your taxes.

Not really much you can do as far as 10 40 ez....I've done both on paper and online and it works out the same....even had liberty tax do my taxes the past two years and I've gotten pretty much the same back except I had to pay them $100 to do it!!!

I think if you go to H&R block and and if you're not satisfied with how much you're getting back, you can just decline it and not complete it through them, they won't charge you. Well, at least that's how it was last year for me

Well I'm 23 and still have very basic taxes, but I've always done my own and plan to keep it that way until I get very overwhelmed.

I sincerely feel people lose sight of what your taxes actually mean when you have somebody else do them. I think it's ridiculous when people do their taxes and all they see is that they get a big refund. Take the time to notice WHAT YOU PAID THE GOVERNMENT for the "privilege" of working/earning your living. Of course, I realize taxes can be very complicated and a specialist might come in handy for people with multiple write-offs/investments/deductions/credits and so forth.

That being said, I think it is literally insane that we have an entire section of services dedicated to paying the fucking government correctly. Something is very disturbing about that fact. You shouldn't have to worry SO MUCH about making sure that you pay Uncle Sam correctly that you have to PAY somebody else to make sure you PAY what you are supposed to. Another reason I firmly support the FairTax. ::salute::

I'm 18 with an income at about 22000 dollars, paid about 4000 through withholding and still owe because I am a dependent, and just turned 18, and just reached a bracket above last year.

I hate the fact that they take SO MUCH from me, I am a Senior in High school taking college level classes, and only make so much by working at least 45-50 hours a week during school, and 90 hours a week during the summer. I pay for all my expenses except rent/utilities.

Makes me not want to work, and I think that is the attitude America is creating.

I'm saving up for college, so don't spend a lot of it.

I work 2 jobs during the summer and during the day I made $15/hour, but it was taxed. Next summer I'm just not going to report that income.

Working 90+ hours a week and as much as 16 hour shifts really reminds you what you're saving money for, that being college to get a nice white collar job :)

You got jacked because your a dependent. Once your on your own you'll be paying a lot more than $4000 a year for shelter and utilities. Enjoy it while you can, life only gets more expensive from here on out. Some day you'll look back and laugh about the fact that you're bitching about 4 grand. Also I commend for working hard and going to school.

I worked average 65 hour weeks over the summer, sometimes 80 and it gave me the opportunity to not have to work during the school year and focus on my studies. Though that cushy amount from the summer is just enough to finish paying tuition for this year so I'm getting another job down by my school to cover expenses. Crappy part about going to a nice private school is the cost, and it doesn't help when my income that pretty much goes straight to the bursar's office (for a religiously affiliated school, so it doesn't pay property tax among other things) gets taxed.

Most of the regular taxes I don't mind paying for so much, I understand you gotta pay for externalities and the such. But me paying for social security is ridiculous, I prolly won't ever see a penny of that, and that's the part that drives me insane.

On a side note, for me, the 1040ez is pretty easy, I just use the free file online, doesn't usually take more than an hour or so for both state and local.
