My 7mgte has excessive oil blow by, and is consumming the engines oil at a rapid pace of a about a quart every week and a half... Im considering running a thicker oil to hopfully subdue the problem for the time being. Currently I am running 10w-40 and I would like to switch to something thicker to help the problem. My question is how thick can I safely go? Would 20w-50 be ok to use?

any insight would be helpfull thanks again.

No problem. People run 20-50 on healthy engines all the time. Not very oil savvy but neither is the engine going to explode. I just hope your next smog test isn't soon. Not only because of the oil but because your cat is very likely dead by now...

im running 20-50 with lucas oil additive lol its just a patch until i can fully rebuild everything soon. but it still runs fine just before you drive it let it sit for a few so that sap were calling oil can actually get to all the parts.

you would never put lucas in your engine again after you see what it does... personally i dont think frothing up your oil is a good thing. hopefully you get the problem fixed

I've run both AmSoil 20w50 and Castrol GTX 20w50(depending on financials when I hit 6k) for a few years now and it does fine. Like said above, just let it run for a minute before taking off. Consumption fell from 1 quart every 600 miles to 1 quart every oil change.

Next change I'm gonna try some 10w30 and see how she does now that 90% of her problems are fixed (still need to get around to swapping out the valve stems so I still plan on some oil usage, but the leaks/drips are all patched).

Castrol to 6k, I can see - but why are you changing Amsoil 20w50 so often?

Never got back to this thread, but the Castrol would be 6k, the Amsoil would be yearly/12-15k.
