For the past few days, university students in the Southern Chinese resort town of Hainan have been quarantined on the grounds of the Hainan University campus with little food or water. Apparently there's been an outbreak of cholera, and the local officials dealt with it Resident Evil style: Lock everybody in, give them no information, and see if they survive. But one woman student has been blogging about the ongoing ordeal, posting pictures and giving status updates several times a day.

Luckily, the bloggers at EastSouthWestNorth have translated her blog for people who don't read Chinese. The incident started quietly enough, with the student blogging about her friend Jiajia feeling sick and throwing up. But within hours, things started to get weird:

Reminded me of reading about eh T virus in RE.

I hope they get enough ORS treatment. I found some reasons why this simple and cheap treatment is not always used.

* lack of nearby adequate health facilities
* lack of awareness among parents about ORS
* logistical problems of packaging, storing and distributing ORS sachets
* since oral rehydration does not initially reduce a child's stool output, some parents conclude that it doesn't work, and give up
* other diseases — such as aids, tuberculosis and malaria - have high profiles and vocal activists

I remember visiting hainan as a small child, Its a very small island off the coast of china if i can recall. The place was VERY dirty at certain places and very very poor, luckily I was a tourist and only passing by. People were living under banana trees and small shacks made of old wood it looked like the Swiss family Robinson except it wasn't happy and dandy. I didnt enjoy the tour AT ALL :nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono: but Hong Kong was great :icon_bigg in fact im going back this winter.

from the governments standpoint, you have to quarantine the area, but ENSURE that the people inside are getting what they need, food, water, clothing etc.

from a personal standpoint, if i were there and i wanted to leave id fight tooth and nail to get out, if i had to kill someone i would without hesitation.

quiet a dilemma.

this is the price you pay when you choose to be a part of society. this could happen in america just as easily, and the same measures would probably be taken. you are never truly free.

Except here the government can be held accountable for its actions, even in this warped day and age. Those Chinese people will take what they get, and be glad they lived through it. That government doesn't give a fuck, and can't be made to.

true. HOWEVER the possibility exists for our government to take things too far.

waco and ruby ridge are great examples of how NOT to handle a situation or conduct an investigation.

if the same situation in china was taking place here in america, what do you think the police enforcing the quarantine would do to a person or group of people trying to escape?

if they ended up shooting the people and killing them, sure they may get fired and tried and even convicted, but that does no justice for the dead party.

anyway my point isnt that there is a better solution, there may be, but i sure as hell could not decide how to handle it; my point is that this is one of the consequences of participating and living in society. probably an inevitable consequence at that.

Wow that's crazy...

Did anyone catch this quote in the middle of the page?

"Socialism is good. Socialism is good. Socialism cannot feed us."

I can see this as being a serious and ongoing problem and probably has been for some time. China's population is getting out of control resulting in contaminated rivers with not enough medical attention that eventually lead to cases such as this. It's sad to see this, but you can only fit so many eggs in one basket before one breaks. And I would bet that more Chinese people will be coming to America even more so.
